“a midsummer night’s dream”

Drawing inspiration from one of my favorite ballets, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, choreographed by George Balanchine, I created an emboridery piece to reflect the ballet's sense of enchantment, transformation, and delicate whimsy. As part of this embroidery, I proposed to create a piece that evokes the spirit of the ballet—one that could exist within the costume of a character on stage, worn in motion and layered with meaning. Using tambour and ribbon embroidery and a palette rooted in nature and magic, the embroidery will incorporate motifs such as florals, vines, and iridescent moments that recall the dreamlike forest setting and the otherworldly beauty of the performance.
This piece coincides closely with the themes explored in my senior work, where I am weaving together memory, movement, and personal narrative—particularly through my lifelong connection to ballet. Just as my senior capsule bridges the ephemeral nature of dance with the permanence of textiles and print, this embroidery continues that conversation in a more intimate, wearable form.
This new piece is another gesture of remembrance for my senior thesis—paying homage to ballet not just as an art form, but as a language that shaped me. It deepens the thread of transformation that runs through my work: from dancer to maker, from movement to material, from the stage to the studio.
This embroidery will become a small, tangible embodiment of the world I am building through my senior collection—a world where dance, fabric, memory, and storytelling are seamlessly interwoven.
